Our values

πŸ’‘

Curiosity

We are curious about how the developing body and brain adapt to their social and nutritional contexts. We are open to getting it wrong. We are open to modes of knowledge that are different from our own. We engage in active reflection for ourselves & the lab. We are committed to curiosity about the incredible complexity of development.

Play

We also believe that play is an essential part of the scientific process. Play also demands ample time for rest and restoration. Creativity and imagination help us to approach problems in new and innovative ways, and we encourage everyone in our lab to explore and experiment with new ideas. We’re also here because it’s fun!

Respect

We come to this work with respect for the communities and participants who graciously share their time and lived experiences with us. We respect each other and what we each bring to the table. We respect every piece that goes into the research process as important and adding value. We understand the importance of making our research accessible and meaningful to our community and the public.

✨

Connection

In this lab, all boats rise together and we are stronger through connection. Community and collaboration are central to everything we do. This includes open and honest communication, making connections inside and outside of the lab, and fostering an atmosphere of safety, trust, and collaboration.

Justice

We are committed to equity, justice, and accountability as we pursue our science. We acknowledge that oppression exists at individual, institutional, and systemic levels. We are committed to individual & collective action, listening, learning, and advocating for those who experience injustice or oppression. This requires ongoing self-reflection and cultural humility.

Integrity

Integrity, care, and a deep commitment to the scientific process are the cornerstones of our work. Science at this level means we are often in uncharted knowledge territory, which requires transparency and rigor. Part of our integrity is also that everyone has the right to contribute to science and grow professionally in a supportive and affirming environment.
